By Ken Daugherty, Auto Collectors Garage

The January 2012 figures are in from the Arizona Auctions. The total sales exceed $180 million and are still rising. That figure easily surpassed the previous high of $150 million. As mentioned in the first article, many new records were set in multiple categories. Let’s examine these groups…

First things first, let’s look at the top end of the market…the rare production and sometimes outrageous of the Collector Car Market. Wealthy people around the world generally commission the Collector Car Market when they are new. The wealthy usually want things that no one else has because they have the money that many of us don’t have. This started when in the early 20th century when cars were produced by hand, with brands such as Packard, Cadillac, Chrysler Imperial, Mercedes, Bugatti, Isotta Francini, Pierce Arrow, Stutz, Auburn, Cord, and the mighty Duesenberg. These cars were the most expensive then (and still are today), so only the wealthy can afford these posh cars. These artistic mechanical masterpieces can be seen today in Museums and Concours D’Elegances around the world, but many of us can only look (NO touching!). Many of us can only dream of driving or owning one.

In upcoming articles we will spend more time on cars that most have seen, driven, or owned. We will take a deeper look into how those cars profoundly influence our culture and environment. They have also influenced our color choices, style, music, and even our clothing. The cars made after WWII are still consumer friendly, and today they can be still be driven regularly. Also, they are living history of technology that show us how we arrived to the modern cars we drive today. Whether you like the exotic foreign makes like Jaguar and Ferrari or great US brands like Corvette, GTO, or Mustang there is something for everyone. They also reignite our passion, loyalty, and dedication to our favorite car. Today our culture does not have the same kind of brand loyalty and are rather mundane and indifferent about what they drive…that’s very different from the 50’s and 60’s. You were a Ford, Chevy or Pontiac guy.

In some cases, like in Europe, it was as nationalistic as soccer is today. The Jaguar and Aston Martin competes with Maserati. The Ferrari competes with Mercedes. Germany competes with Italy and Italy competes with England. By the time the 60’s arrived, America jumped into the European Races with Ford (USA) versus Ferrari (Italy), culminating with the Ford GT 40 winning Lemans 1-2-3 and beating Italian Ferrari. Also at this time, Carroll Shelby won the World Championship in a Shelby Daytona Coupe. I grew up in these times- the passion and competition was fierce, and I for one miss that brand loyalty.

Fortunately, some brand loyalty exists today in the Collector Car field and can be enjoyed through auctions, car shows, as well as the great Friday and Saturday night drive-in classic car meets across the USA. These platforms allow us to show off our pride and joy Collector Car. More discussion to come in more detail in future articles.

By Ken Daugherty, Auto Collectors Garage

What did the Arizona Auctions tell us about the Collector Car Market? THAT IT’S DOING VERY GOOD!!!! Multiple records were set in many different areas. One thing I love about the Collector Car Hobby and Market is how many different submarkets we have and how different the dynamics of these areas are. And guess what? They are all UP from the last two years and by a good bit—15-30% across the board. So whatever you like—Pre-War, Classics (both American & European), Post War, 50’s American & European, 60’s-70’s Full-Size Cars, Muscle Cars, European (especially Porsche & Mercedes), and Race Cars have showed increases. Even my least favorite- cars from the late 70’s – 80’s- have showed increases.

If you are a buyer…you’d better get used to the increases, because prices will keep rising. We have already seen a lot of inventory re-priced in the last week alone. Remember, this is a worldwide market…not just the USA only. Asia, for example, is a market doing very well. WATCH OUT if just 1% of the new emerging economies become car collectors like what happened in Japan during the 1980’s. With such a huge Asian population, there won’t be enough inventory to satisfy the demand. These Collector Cars are an internationally recognized currency, and are easy to value anywhere. So even if there is no interest in the historical or fun aspects, they are still valuable commodities.

Be aware and act accordingly. More discussion to come in more detail in future articles.

The development of The Tipo 60 started in late 1957. The year that Maserati won the world Championship was with the wonderful 250F Grand Prix car driven by the indomitable Fangio. Maserati’s Chief engineer at the time, Giulio Alfieri, came up with a brilliant idea. Design a smaller, lighter sports car that emphasized handling, braking, and steering as much as power. How would he do it? First, he took the 150S four cylinder racing engine-redesigned it so that the block slants forty-five degrees so it could fit in this new aerodynamic body concept. Second, he designed a chassis that has over 200 small tubes welded together—much smaller tubes than was used on previous race cars. Last, he designed an aluminum body that hugged the frame, chassis, and wheels like no other body had before.

When the redesigned two litre motor was completed in January 1959 it began dyno testing and produced 165hp at 7400rpm. Not good enough for Alfieri. He redesigned the heads, cams, and intake, and retested in February 1959. It now produced 195hp at 7800rpm which met Alfieri’s goal. The engine and chassis were first mated in February. The final body design was agreed on and the contract was given to the Allegreti Brothers for final construction. Body work was completed in March 1959 and returned to Maserati. The first completed prototype left the factory for testing on May 8th, 1959. Final weight: 1100 pounds!!!

Next decision was which driver to use to test the prototype. It came down to one of the most famous racers of all time, Stirling Moss. Moss came to the factory on May 19, 1959 and drove the car four or five laps at the AutoDrome in Modena, Italy. He was particularly impressed—the car was incredibly light, precise steering, neutral handling, and superb brakes. In fact, he said he felt like it was glued to the track. Only minor changes were made and the prototype was ready to race.

The Orsi Family, owners of Maserati at the time, and Alfieri thought they had a 2 litre class winner now called the Tipo 60 and had thought perhaps they should upgrade the engine to 3 litres and it would be a contender for the world championship. The first driving test was held on June 4-6, 1959 at Nurburgring where Moss broke the 2 litre track record. The design, build, and subsequent test cycle had taken only EIGHT months and EVERY goal had been met.

Early on, word got out about this prototype and Maserati started receiving inquiries as early as March 1959. Italian interest was minimal however American interest was numerous. In fact, the first order was from Joe Lubin of Los Angeles on April 27, 1959.

The American interest really wanted a larger engine which challenged Alfieri’s engineering skill. After many attempts, he finally decided to increase the block height which allowed a longer stroke. Early dyno testing of the new engine showed 250hp at 6500rpm! The new engine size was 2.9 litres. After successful tests with the new engine, American customers ordered 6 cars and they renamed the car Tipo 61. And guess how much a Tipo 61 cost in 1960? $10,800.00!!!!!!!

Moss was again hired for the first real race. Formula 2 Grand Prix at Rouen, France on July 12, 1959. It was not much of a race as Moss built a huge lead and won going away. At this event the Tipo 60 got its first nickname-“Spider Web”. It acquired other nicknames such as “Spaghetti Strand”, Soda Straw”, and “Welders Nightmare”. At a race in Nassau a pundit said the frame reminded him of a “Birdcage” with its intricate layout and that is the name that stuck. In fact, has there been a car before or since that was known and became so famous from a nickname? If you say Birdcage today any car enthusiast knows what it is.

The names of the famous Birdcage drivers and race teams reads like a Who’s Who’s of Racing History. Such famous drivers as Stirling Moss, Carroll Shelby, Dan Guerney, Gus Andrey, Lloyd Katskee, Jim Hall, and Walt Hansgen. Racing team greats such as Camaradi, Lucky Casner, and Briggs Cunningham. How did these drivers feel about the Tipo 60/61? Carroll Shelby said it was the best cornering fast car he had ever driven. In fact Shelby said “it is easy to go fast, to stop, to corner, and does not seem to be working hard at top speed”. Then there is Dan Guerney, at the time a member of the Ferrari Racing Team, with the TR59. He was ecstatic about the handling of the Tipo 60 stating “balance, the car is sprung and brakes are just right for its weight and power”. He also said “the combination of huge brakes, light weight, and a DeDion allows me to go deep into a corner without locking everything up. The adhesion is just fabulous”.

The Tipo 60/61 raced at every famous race track in the world. LeMans, Nurburgring-a glorious First Place Win, Nassau, Cuba, and Targo Floris. Racing in the United States is where the Tipo 60/61 had its most success. It participated at Riverside, Daytona, Pensacola, Elkhart Lake, Limerock, Marlboro, Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca, Cumberland, Bridgehampton, and Montgomery just to name a few. An American recap of 1960 racing shows the five major races Tipo 60/61 had 3-1St Places, 1-2nd Place, and 1-3rd Place. It totally dominated the SCCA National Races. Of the TWELVE major races it won 1st Place NINE times.

Chassis 2459 was build for Briggs Cunningham. Finished on February 27th, 1960 and painted Red. It was sent to Alfred Momo’s shop in Queens, New York where the teams top driver was Walt Hansgen which completed a formable team. The facilities were without equal anywhere in the world. The Momo crew could build, make, or repair anything that raced. Walt Hansgen, their top driver, was one of the great success stories in American Racing. He began his career in 1951. He joined Cunningham and Momo in 1956 and over the next 4 years won 40 races and twice honored as the SCCA Driver Of The Year. After Momo received 2459 from the factory it was sent to Sebring. This was a 12 hour race and since the car had almost no testing it had multiple mechanical problems and did not finish. It did, however, post the second fastest lap time at the race. The fastest lap time was posted by another Tipo 61 driven by Stirling Moss. So, the top two lap speeds were by both Maserati Birdcage. After the car was tested properly, Hansgen was very successful in 2459 Tipo 61. First place at Cumberland, Maryland; Bridgehampton , New York; and Montgomery, New York in 1960. He usually had the fastest car in all his races and unless he had a mechanical failure always won.

At the end of each racing season, Momo’s shop rebuilt 2459 for the next season. On February 11, 1962 August Papst cracked up the car on a practice run. The car was sent back to Momo’s shop where it was dismantled and parts sent to England.

Many years later a famous Maserati collector with help from original drawings from the factory reconstructed the frame. He also rebuilt a correct Tipo 60 2 litre engine with an original cylinder head, lower crankcase, sump, transaxle, cam covers, and carburetors. The frame and engine were delivered to Steve Hart Racing in 2008, the most knowledgeable of all Birdcage mechanics in the world today. He began restoration from original parts which include rear lights, repeater lights, rev counter, ignition switch, light switch, starter button, indicator switch, and front hubs. The rest of the parts were built from original factory drawings or copied from other correct Tipo 60/61 parts. The fuel tank is a new safety cell for obvious reasons. Many factory modifications were done in the 1960’s. Steve Hart Racing has extensive knowledge of these factory modifications and performed them on this car. The vehicle was completed in January 2010 and FIA approval was received in September 2010.

The movie industry would have you believe that important inventions happen in a lab, with a scientist wearing a white coat surrounded by beakers shouting “Aha!” after a moment of clarity. But in reality, inventions are developed a very different way.

Often, ideas for the items we rely on today were developed years (if not centuries) ago. Most are familiar with Leonardo da Vinci being credited for creating the first ever helicopter concept, which he designed in 1493. But did you know that an early version of the ipod was created in 1979? Kane Kramer of England came up the idea for a portable music device the size of a cigarette pack, with a display screen with buttons for four-way navigation. Kramer even planned to open a music store where the new songs could be downloaded through phone wires. Only five devices were built, however, before the idea was grounded. The device and the digital music store are very common now, and have been since Apple’s Steve Jobs introduced the ipod in 2001. Leonardo’s helicopter and Kramer’s music player are good examples that sometimes modern technology can just be…too modern.

Another idea far ahead of his time was the Henney Kilowatt. The Kilowatt was the world’s first modern electric car, and was powered by rechargeable batteries. The brainchild of B.L. England and C. Russell Feldmann, the propulsion system on the Kilowatt included 36 six-volt batteries- 18 in front and 18 in the rear- and had a range of 40 to 60 miles per day. Although the Kilowatt’s batteries would regenerate after stops of 15 minutes or longer, it could be fully recharged overnight by plugging the car into any standard outlet.

Considered the predecessor to battery electric vehicles like the GM Volt, the Kilowatt was actually inspired by the modern day golf cart. To operate the Kilowatt, the driver simply selected forward or reverse on the dash-mounted controller and stepped on the accelerator. It handled normally, and could easily carry four adults while emitting no noxious fumes. Advertised as “silent, dependable, simple, versatile, uncomplicated, undemanding, and completely electric”, the Kilowatt was a green vehicle far ahead of its time.

Since the Kilowatt’s top speed was 35mph, Henney planned to market the car in urban areas, with plans to target housewives, salesmen, meter readers, and utility companies. Because it didn’t consume power while idle, the Kilowatt could sit out traffic jams without diminishing battery strength. Despite such advanced engineering concepts, only 100 Kilowatt’s were ever built, with not a single vehicle ever sold to the general public. Electric utility companies were given 58 vehicles for promotional purposes, and the rest went to a collector who used them as novelty items. With inexpensive and plentiful gasoline in the early 1960’s, and the car industry focused on building cars larger and larger, the tiny Kilowatt was an idea before its time.

Currently, Auto Collectors Garage has the only one remaining operating Kilowatt in the United States.

SOLD

What’s Old is New!

Over 50 years ago, the Eureka Co. was into production with its own electric-powered auto, the four door, sub-compact Henney “Kilowatt”. The Henney Motor Co. was located at the Eureka plant in Bloomington, Il. The company was then known as Eureka-Williams. The Kilowatt utilized a Renault Dauphine body. The car was advertised as “silent, dependable, simple, versatile, uncomplicated, undemanding, and completely electric”.

With inexpensive and plentiful gasoline the trend was towards larger and larger cars with tailfins, long hoods, and trunks. The tiny Kilowatt was an idea before its time. It was marketed for in-town use as a second car, ideal for shopping, commuting, or pleasure driving and for business use in deliveries, meter reading and similar activities, including those inside large plants, since the Kilowatt emitted no fumes.

The Kilowatt featured a heavy-duty traction type electric motor, connected directly to a single gear housing. No cooling system was needed, of course. Nor did the motor require generator, spark plugs, air cleaner, carburetor or exhaust system. Air conditioning was not an option. Power came from heavy duty storage batteries with 72 volts for the motor and 12 volts for lights, horn, and signals. After a normal day’s driving, the batteries could be recharged overnight with a 25 foot electric cord.

Because of the weight of the batteries, the Kilowatt had a torsional stabilizer at the front, special heavy duty coil springs around direct acting shock absorbers at each wheel and advanced new air stabilizer on rear wheels.

The Kilowatt was advertised as being able to “accelerate briskly to legal limits” on crowded city streets. Because at idle it did not consume power, the Kilowatt could sit out traffic jams without diminishing the batteries.

The electric cars of today still have some of the same challenges of the Kilowatt: weight of the batteries, limited mileage on a single battery charge, and life expectancy of the lead acid batteries.

As previously mentioned, the bodies of these cars were supplied by Renault. The body serial number is 1177780 which is the numeric sequence for a 1957 Renault Dauphine thus the reason this car was titled as a 1957. Also, on the ID plate is a motor serial # WT40-5 which indicates it is the 5th motor by the Eureka Williams Company.

This car will come with complete documentation of the restoration both receipts and photos, a book “The Henney Motor Company”, an original letter from the Eureka Williams Company dated March 28th, 1961 including the enclosures of the brochure “The Henney Kilowatt” and fact sheet—all original, and a Operation document-copies only.

THIS IS THE ONLY OPERATING HENNEY KILOWATT IN THE WORLD!

#506 of 2000

On February 7th 1963 Ford introduced a special Limited Edition Thunderbird Landau called the “Principality of Monaco”. Only 2000 of these cars were produced, each individually numbered 1 through 2000. The cars came in Corinthian White and had a vinyl top in a maroon color called Rose Beige. This color combination was never offered on any other Thunderbird model. The interior was white leather with a white steering wheel and simulated rosewood trim. Each car was fitted with a set of Kelsey-Hays chromed spoke wire wheels. On the dashboard of each car was a special gold-toned nameplate with the car’s special serial number.

During 1962, the American movie going public had a fascination with Princess Grace of Monaco, formally the Academy Award winning movie star Grace Kelly. Ford had learned that Princess Grace was considering re-establishing her acting career, and preliminary feelers were extended to determine the royal couples willingness to participate in what would be a promotional opportunity for Ford. On September 19th 1962, Ford representatives had a meeting at the Royal Court of Monaco and consulted with Princess Grace on a color scheme for the car.

Benson Ford presented car #1 to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace at a grand ceremony that was held at Grimaldi family palace on January 2nd 1963. Near the end of the trip to Monaco Ford representatives mailed 900,000 sales letters to prospective customers in the U. S.

The car, dubbed the “Princess Grace” model by Ford salesmen officially hit the showroom on February 22nd 1963. To further the promotion of the cars, #2 thru #19 were sent to Ford district offices and used as displays at auto shows around the U. S.

Upon the death of Princess Grace, car #1 was officially retired and placed in storage in Monaco’s Royal Museum where it remains to this day. It has never been put on display out of respect for the beloved Princess and actress.

Of the 1,981 cars that were made available to the American public, only 15 are known to still exist.

Axle: 4 3.89:1

The completely restyled 1957 Ford was longer, lower, roomier, and sleeker. The frame got wider and was supported by an entire new suspension and new more powerful engine offerings. The result was a highly desirable car that finished first in the production race (beating Chevrolet-a feat Ford managed in only two years in the 50s-the other being 1954).

The 1957 Tudor Ranch Wagon has been and continues to be a favorite of street rod and custom car builders and fans. This two door wagon has survived in rare stock configuration. The vast majority of Ranch Wagons have been made into street rods and customs.

This is an incredibly high quality restoration with outstanding attention to detail. The fit and finish is one of the best on a 50s production car.

This is one of the world’s most beautiful GT cars. This incredible find is almost totally original. It has had a few spot paint jobs with the car was 1 year old. It has been driven only 15,000 the last 35 years. It’s never been driven in bad weather and it was always garaged. Interior, dash, gauges, console, carpet ALL ORIGINAL. Trunk mat is original and has original spare. The car starts and runs smooth as silk. It drives like new. The convertible is also original. The existing paint has a few minor dings and it has been cleaned and the paint has been buffed. This timeless machine can be driven and enjoyed now or would make a spectacular candidate for a few upgrades. Original owners’ manual comes with the car.

Originally delivered to South Africa in 1938. The second owner acquired the car right after WWII and rallied and entered other local racing venues in South Africa until early 1950’s. The third owner received the car in 1980 with an original engine that had thrown a rod. He rebuilt the car completely and replaced the engine with another correct 3.5 litre engine with the same M prefix E suffix. The fourth owner was 1984 and it was taken to New Zealand in 1986.

The car was then exported to Terry Larson, who is a famous expert on early Jaguars and racing Jaguars. The car was extensively restored by Mr. Larson and then sold to the fifth owner in Nevada in the 1990’s. From there it went to the Prisma Collection in Montgomery, Alabama in 1994. In 2000 was sold the present owner in Texas.

The restoration has held up extremely well and the car is still in outstanding condition. In the last 10 years it has only gone to show or concours events in Texas. In 2011 it had a major tuneup and detail and is now ready for sale.

Lemon Ice Yellow with Black Leather Interior

3900 ORIGINAL MILES.

Custom built by Premier Motorsports. This Hi-Tech car captures the original character of the Cobra. Every original part that could be duplicated to match the original has been done. The smallest detail such as door hinges was built like the AC cars built back in the 1960’s.

Engine

In 2010 the car was refitted with a Keith Craft FE 482ci engine producing 605hp with Dyno sheet included. This engine has less than 100 miles.

Frame & Chassis

The frame and chassis is a work of art. It is a tubular chassis made of cold drawn steel tubing measuring 1.25 inch thickness. The rear suspension is a Thunderbird/Lincoln IRS 8.8 inch center section with a 3.27 limited slip differential. The rear housing was narrowed to fit the original Cobra dimension in fact the dimensions are so authentic the entire housing and rear suspension mechanism will bolt right into a 427 Cobra.

All suspension, wishbones, control arms, body tubing, brackets, and pedal arms are powder coated and again all these items will bolt into an original Cobra.

Brakes

The brakes are 12.2 inch diameter vent discs with Wilwood Superlight II four piston calipers all the way around.

Radiator

It has been upgraded for more cooling capacity to a five row core. It will also bolt right into an original Cobra.

Transmission

Tremac 5 speed

Body, Bumpers, Wheels

The body is high tech fiberglass with all interior panels aluminum as the original Cobras were. This body was made in England from molds of the original AC body. The cockpit is surrounded by a steel tube structure that bolts to the chassis. In fact, the body attaches to the frame with 16 bolts-12 of which surround the cockpit. This provides some measure of occupant protection. The roll bar and SC style bumpers are as they were for the original Cobra.

The beautiful wheels are Motorsport Specialty 3pc modular polished aluminum that are true knockoffs mounted on new Michelin tires.

Cockpit

The cockpit is also a duplication of the original 427 Cobra with a full compliment of modern Autometer Gauges with the old style look, correct original style steering wheel, and correct original style gear shift lever

All the manufacturing and assembly work done was to the highest standards. Multiple pictures are available on the manufacturing process of this car. All receipts and documentation from time of original manufacture are with the car.

These impressive cars have received some great endorsements from automotive writers. This particular car was featured in “Kit Car” in July 2003. The original magazine with the article goes with the car.

Priced at $49,900

One of the rarest muscle cars ever produced by any American car manufacturer—ONLY 10 of these cars were produced by Ford.

This car received an extensive two year frame off restoration. Incredible effort was made to duplicate all original factory specifications. The detail was meticulously supervised even down to assembly line color markings when the car first left the factory. The results are stunning and the car looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. One modification, however, was made. Four wheel disc brakes were substituted for the original drum brakes. This was necessary, of course, for stopping power on such a high performance car.

The engine is the famous 427 R code design with a 2/4 barrel carburetors, solid lifters, special block construction, special crankshaft, connecting rods, and bearings. It is also equipped with a low riser racing style heads, and aluminum intake manifold. The engine was rated conservatively at 425 hp. In 1963 Ford 427s placed first, second, third, fourth, and fifth place at the Daytona 500 Nascar race. This was also the engine Henry Ford used in 1966 & 1967 to power the famous Ford GT 40 race cars that beat the best Europe had to offer at Lemans and placed first, second, and third. Carroll Shelby used this engine to power one of the fastest cars ever produced—the 427 Cobra.

Along with all these famous mechanical components the car was produced with the famous XL500 trim. This consists of bucket seats, center console, special door panels, as well as interior and exterior trim making this one of the most beautiful interiors ever put in a car. Many of these appointments were taken from the Thunderbirds produced during this same era.

Truly one of the worlds’ greatest collector cars that would be a welcome addition to any private or museum collection especially a collector that had American racing heritage as its theme.

A major upgrade done to an older restoration done in 2010 by ACG including new paint, electrical and brakes gone through and upgraded as needed, and gauges removed, cleaned, and repaired as needed; Kardex numbers matching car. Outstanding condition.

- Ivory/Red
- Car# 11201
- Engine# 30139

Only 527 of these very rare 1500cc Coupes were produced. It also has a 4 speed gearbox with transaxle and 4 wheel independent suspension. It has the wonderful “Pre A” art deco dashboard with real wood trim on the top of the doors. The car has the correct numbers where they should be on the engine and the car number is also on the hood and trunk. Very few of these early cars are left on the road today but to find one in this good of condition is almost impossible.

The car originally came out of the Huffman Collection into another private collection in 2010. It was discovered the original color was Ivory and that the red interior was correct. The car was disassembled for repainting to the correct color by ACG in 2010. Upon reassembly any other items that needed attention were taken care of. The car was already in such good condition that it required very little in the way of mechanical upgrades.

This very proper and rare automobile drives just like you expect a 1952 Porsche to drive.

The four litre Mistral was first introduced in the 1966 Geneva Motor Show and was one of the featured cars. The car was designed by Pietro Frua. A total of 123 were produced. The last 35 cars had the 4 litre/6 cylinder engine.

The car is equipped with a 6 cylinder dual overhead cam engine, Lucas fuel injection, ZF 5 speed synchronized gearbox, four wheel servo assisted disc brakes, power windows, 15” Borrani wire wheels and Smith style gauges as opposed to Jaeger style gauges. The four litre Spyder body was built mainly in Alloy with the cockpit area, entire front section and doors all in Alloy and the hood , rear fenders and deck lid in steel.
This was the last of the line of Maserati six cylinder engines and the 4 litre is the ultimate GT car produced by Maserati. This car has great performance and is very nimble and well balanced. Combine this with a beautiful Connally leather interior, Wilton Wool carpets and the superb Maserati wooden steering wheel.

This particular car has been in a world renowned private Maserati collection for the last ten years.

This barn find was discovered in a Cincinnati area garage where it had been sitting for over 25 years. It was then privately restored by a collector with his own mechanic till it was approximately 75% complete. The collector passed away in 2009 and the car was delivered to ACG where the restoration was finished by long term Jaguar experts. It was totally disassembled and everything was restored properly as if it was done by the factory. All items were either rebuilt or replaced. It is a superb example of the most desirable of all XKE’s—the 4.2 Series I Covered Headlight Roadsters.

The car drives and operates as well as it looks.

Car originally equipped with an “X” code 352 engine and in 2008 replaced with a period correct 390 engine, 4 barrell carburetor, aluminum intake, dual exhaust, power steering, power brakes, power top, and air conditioning.

Two owner Caliornia car. Paint and interior approximately 3 years old and was already done when car was purchased. In 2009 the following work was done: front and rear suspension rebuilt, new heavy duty front sway, brakes serviced and new wheel bearings, new valve covers and valve cover gaskets, aluminum intake manifold and gasket, factory 4 barrel carburetor, new starter, new chrome air cleaner, wiring replaced as needed, belts and hoses replaced as needed, new regulator and alternator; replaced seals, fuel lines, and rubber as needed; major transmission service including new rear seal and shift shaft seal, new high output battery, all new tires, rims painted, and lap seat belts installed.

Great bargain. Priced less than it would cost to restore.

- Black/Black/Black top
- 390 V8 (C3AF-6015-H)
