The 65′ Stirling Moss Shelby GT350 Mustang has an interesting story…

In the early 1980s, legendary driver Stirling Moss got an itch for vintage racing. He wanted a Shelby Mustang and reached out to his friend Carroll Shelby to help him out.

In 1984, Shelby commissioned Cobra Automotive to convert a 1965 production year GT350 Mustang into an “R-code” credentialed racing car.

The team at Cobra completely transformed the vehicle to meet the correct R-codes for the GT350 with new engine components and a lighter body. It replaced all glass with plexiglass, removed all seats but the driver’s seat, added a roll bar, installed appropriate racing gauges, and beefed up suspension, the transmission and the cooling system.

Included in the car’s extensive documentation is a letter by Shelby’s “favorite race car builder,” Phil Remington, verifying the authentic R-code credentials.

After completion of the conversion in 1985 and submission of FIA paperwork, Moss took the car to Australia’s Targa Tasmania for its first race. He won.

Moss then went on to compete in every race on the vintage race circuit in that part of the world. He won all of them.

Then he took it to England and all over Europe. From 1991 to 1997, over nine vintage races, Moss and his GT350 never lost. And it was never wrecked.

This special vehicle was Moss’ favorite car of all time. It had very high gear ratios and he admired its speed on the straightaways. In fact, in many races, he never left second gear.

The car spent several years at the Geneva Airport Museum before it made its way to Houston, where it made an appearance at the 2007 Keels & Wheels Concours d’Elegance. It was an historic event. In attendance were both Stirling Moss and Carol Shelby, reunited for the first time in more than 40 years.

Later, at a Worldwide Auctions event, Shelby fondly dubbed the storied car the “Moss Shelby.” It then sold for a record price at that time of $500,000.

The result of a unique collaboration between racing greats Carroll Shelby and Stirling Moss, the 1965 Stirling Moss Shelby GT350 Mustang is truly a special car.
